From Dark to Light
From Dark to Light is inspired by Murphy’s love of fall festivities, particularly the carving of pumpkins for Halloween. While teaching the basic life cycle of a pumpkin, the story also explores the emotions associated with change in environment, fitting in when you feel different, and finding love and acceptance in a family.
Murphy captures the imagination of young readers by giving her character, Pumpker, a distinct, childlike voice.
Most children can relate to the emotions Pumpker feels as he is planted in a dark hole. While he’s excited for the changes in his near future, he doesn’t fully understand what will happen. At first he’s afraid of his new environment, and then, as he adapts, he longs to be loved and accepted by a family.
From Dark to Light also deals with Pumpker’s feelings of isolation. Planted along with his two sisters, he feels like an outsider because they have different interests and speak their own “language” he doesn’t understand.
Murphy hopes that From Dark to Light will encourage conversations between children, parents, and teachers about change and the emotions that go along with it. She also hopes it will spark the imagination of young readers and build excitement for fall.
