I just resize my photo before using it in Spark. For example, for the split screen, a square format works best, so I reframe my image to the way I want it, then I use that image in spark. It’s great. I really like the ability to change the focal point of an image in Spark too, this gives me the ability to make slight adjustments to the way the image and text work together graphically. I really appreciate the cleanliness of Spark in terms of keeping the design tools clean and consistent.
One recommendation I have though is that they provide users with this guidance in a more proactive way. It should be easier for users to know how to get the effects you want. The Spark comment below could have easily said.... here is a link to the standard image sizes for each photo layout option , and here is a link on how to use the focal point tool. :)
